Two Traditions
at Carrington Hall, Redwood city
Two Traditions. Three distinguished artists. One magical evening.
ICMA invites you to join us for a rare treat of Indian classical music – "Two Traditions" ...bound together by one soul!
Some background
Dhrupad - a form of Nada Yoga (yoga of sound), an ancient and disciplined style of presenting Raga that is deeply rooted in the Vedas and transports you back to a timeless space, giving you a spiritual experience. Khayal - a more modern adaptation, finds greater scope for improvisation without detracting from the grammar of the Raga.
It is this stark contrast and the striking similarity of these two preeminent genres that we at ICMA are excited to present to you in this unique two-part concert.
Come join us to see first-hand how Dhrupad and Khayal are at once so fundamentally similar, yet unique in their emotional appeal and the atmosphere they elicit.
Who's performing?
"Dhrupad: the soul of sound," will be showcased by The Gundecha Brothers, the impeccable duo and torch bearers of this oldest vocal genre of Hindustani classical music in practice today. "Khayal: the seed of thought," will feature the highly coveted and supremely melodious Dr. Prabha Atre, one of the senior-most living legends of Indian Classical Music.
The Gundecha Brothers bear a name known to the world for making Dhrupad popular and accessible. They are today's most active performers of this ancient Indian musical vocal genre. In 2012, they received the national accolade, Padma Shri -- one of India's highest civilian honors -- from the government of India for their valuable contributions to Indian Classical Music.
Trained in the Kirana gharana under Sureshbabu Mane and Hirabai Badodekar, Dr. Prabha Atre is renowned for her creativity, musical innovation, versatility, intellect, and the distinctness of her vocal style. Her musical career has been illustrious and multi-faced; on top of her performing career, she worked as a music producer for All-India Radio, authored several books and publications on a myriad of musical topics, served as an academic professor of Indian classical music at universities in India and US, and has been teaching students in classical music since 1969. She is the recipient of some of India's highest honors including the Padma Shri in 1990 and the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, which was conferred on her by the President of India in 2002.
