The show that captured the hearts of South Bay audiences is back, this time, by the bay. In proud partnership with Asia Week SF 2015, we can't think of a more fitting festival for Melange's San Francisco debut to celebrate art, culture, and heritage at Asia Week SF.
ICMA is pleased to invite you to join us for the musical production Melange ...by the Bay! and the vibrant art exhibit, Glimpses of India, at the Cowell Theater, Fort Mason Center, San Francisco, October 3, 2015. Whether you’re new to Indian classical music or a long-time fan, Melange is a unique musical and cultural immersion experience that is sure to delight the hearts of all.
An Evening of Indian Classical Music
Dating back to the Vedic period, Indian Classical Music has evolved through a cultural synthesis of several musical streams - predominantly Vedic, Persian, and Folk. Contemporary Indian music is based on a rich milieu of genres dating as far back as the 12th century, in an expansive canvas comprising today's Northern India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Afghanistan. From Khayal to Tarana, Thumri to Ghazal, Sufi to Bhajan (and more!), Melange - as the name suggests - is a carefully-selected and exciting mix of genres that make up the Indian musical tradition.
Melange celebrates this music and its rich history, taking the audience through the centuries, through diverse regions, and through nuanced sounds that will grip your soul.
With Seasoned and Expressive Musicians
Conceived, written and directed by the Bay Area-based and world-renowned musician Mahesh Kale, Melange boasts an ensemble cast of accomplished artists like Salar Nader (Tabla), Vivek Datar (Harmonium) and features guest artists like Alam Khan (Sarod), George Brooks (Saxophone), Radhika Iyer (Violin) and Selvaganesh (Percussion). Renowned Bollywood actress Ashvini Bhave joins the cast as the Master of Ceremony. With a top-notch cast, Melange combines art, history, storytelling, and captivating, emotive music.
A Show Not-to-be-Missed
"It [Melange] was a confluence of cultures, moods, and sounds, presented with such an artistic finesse. Kudos to the team that created diametrically opposite moods in a three-hour concert"- The Indian Express
"Glimpses of India" Art Exhibit
Don’t miss the art exhibit that starts an hour before the concert. You are invited to view Glimpses of India where local artists will showcase Indian-inspired art. The selected artists offer their thematic interpretation of culture, heritage, music, dance, yoga, demographics, landscapes, and religion. The gallery will feature a variety of art media and techniques reflecting the diverse and broad artistic talent of the Bay Area.
