June 25, 2023 (Sunday)
ICMA is proud to collaborate with Stanford Jazz Festival to present Indian Jazz Journey, the wonderful musical collaboration between Indian classical music star Mahesh Kale and jazz saxophone virtuoso George Brooks. One of the most popular jazz events in the Bay Area, this annual concert blends jazz energy and Indian ragas and rhythms in a performance that transcends cultural and musical barriers. Mahesh and George will be joined on stage by amazing musicians, pianist Utsav Lal, tabla master Mayookh Bhaumik, guitarist Julian Coryell, and drummer Scott Amendola.
Mahesh Kale is a National Award winning Indian Classical music vocalist and a passionate champion for spreading the sublime joy and beauty of this traditional and ethereal art form among the newer generations. He is always ready to experiment with different genres of music to create something fresh and beautiful while maintaining the sanctity of the original art form. He is also the founder of the Indian Classical Music and Arts Foundation (ICMA).
George Brooks is a prolific and diverse saxophonist and composer, acclaimed for successfully bridging the worlds of jazz and Indian classical music. He is the founder of several Indian fusion music groups.
Mahesh and George bring back their popular collaboration to the Stanford Jazz Festival and are joined this year by two remarkable young musicians - Utsav Lal, the Raga Pianist and Tabla exponent, Mayookh Bhaumik.
Utsav Lal, often known as the ‘Raga Pianist’ is recognized as one of the rarest of pianists with his innovative handling of Indian Classical Music on a Western instrument. Utsav’s music is acclaimed for its sincerity, depth and powerful intensity.
Mayookh Bhaumik is an Indian classical tabla virtuoso, an electronic sound artist as well as a National Award winning film composer. This New York born, bi-cultural global concert artist has performed with the likes of Ustad Nusrat FatehAli Khan to Jazz heavyweights like Oteil Burbridge. He has been groomed by an enviable list of gurus including Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustad Sabir Khan.
Julian Coryell, son of famed famed jazz guitarist Larry Coryell, plays several instruments including guitar, piano, drums and violin. Coryell has been playing and recording music on a variety of instruments with famed musicians such as Carole King, Jewel, Alanis Morissette and Aimee Mann. Coryell continues to produce artists and is actively involved in song writing partnerships with a number of artists.
Scott Amendola is an American drummer from the San Francisco Bay Area. His styles include jazz, blues, groove, and rock. Amendola is originally from New Jersey and studied at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. After relocating to California, he rose to popularity in the 1990s as a member of the band T.J.
Please join us as the artistes weave together a unique tapestry by blending the traditional elements of Indian Classical ragas and rhythms with the complex melody and harmony of Jazz to make it a memorable evening for us all!
